A 26-year-old woman died under suspicious circumstances in Noida on Sunday, with her family alleging that she was harassed for dowry by her husband and in-laws. Police have registered a case and launched an investigation.
Incident Details
According to police, the woman, identified as [Name withheld], was found dead at her in-laws’ residence in Sector [X], Noida. Her body was discovered hanging in her bedroom late Saturday night. The family of the deceased alleged that she was subjected to mental and physical harassment for dowry ever since her marriage last year.
The parents claimed that demands for additional cash and gifts had been made repeatedly, and that their daughter had confided in them about the ill-treatment she faced.
Police Action
The Noida Police said a case has been registered under Section 304B of the IPC (dowry death) along with sections of the Dowry Prohibition Act.
“We have registered an FIR against the husband, father-in-law, and mother-in-law based on the complaint filed by the victim’s parents. Further investigation is underway,” a senior police officer said.
The body has been sent for post-mortem examination, and further legal proceedings will be based on the report.
Background on Dowry Deaths
Section 304B of the IPC defines a dowry death as the unnatural death of a woman within seven years of marriage if she was subjected to cruelty or harassment over dowry demands. Despite awareness campaigns and legal measures, dowry-related deaths continue to be reported across Uttar Pradesh, with the NCR region seeing several cases every year.
The Noida incident has once again brought the issue of dowry-related violence under focus. Women’s rights activists have demanded stricter enforcement of dowry prohibition laws and better protection mechanisms for young brides facing harassment.
