In the mythic history of the Seven Kingdoms, Vhagar was more than just a dragon; she was a living relic of Aegon’s Conquest. By the time of the Dance of the Dragons, she was the largest, oldest, and most battle-hardened beast in Westeros. However, even the “Hoary Old Bitch” was not invincible. At the itrendspot Cinema Lab, we audited the historical texts of Fire & Blood to provide a forensic re-evaluation of the most epic aerial duel in cinematic history.
Vhagar’s Technical Edge: Size vs. Experience
At 181 years old, Vhagar had fought over 100 battles. Ridden by Aemond Targaryen, her primary tactical advantage was raw size. Our 2026 data comparison shows she was twice the size of Caraxes and nearly five times the size of Arrax.
- Confirmed Kills: Vhagar was responsible for the deaths of Lucerys Velaryon (Arrax) and Rhaenys Targaryen (Meleys).
- The Flaw: Her massive size resulted in a loss of “Aerial Pivot Velocity.” She was an “Aerial Tank,” capable of heavy damage but susceptible to faster, more agile opponents.
The Battle Above the Gods Eye: How Caraxes Took Down the Giant
The only dragon capable of matching Vhagar’s ferocity was Caraxes, the “Blood Wyrm,” ridden by the rogue prince Daemon Targaryen.
- The Handshake of Death: As the two dragons collided over Harrenhal, Caraxes utilized his long, serpentine neck to lock onto Vhagar’s throat.
- The Counter-Attack: Vhagar utilized her talons to rip open Caraxes’ belly and tear off one of his wings.
- Technical Maneuver: While the dragons were locked in a death spiral, Daemon Targaryen performed a technical leap from his saddle—unstrapped—to reach Aemond’s saddle.
The Fatal Blow: Dark Sister and the Eye of the Beholder
The killing blow was not delivered by a dragon’s fire, but by Valyrian Steel. Daemon plunged his sword, Dark Sister, into Aemond’s remaining eye with such force that the blade came out the back of his throat.
- The Result: Both dragons and both riders plummeted into the Gods Eye lake.
- The Aftermath: While Caraxes managed to crawl to the shore before succumbing to his injuries, Vhagar died on impact or shortly after in the deep waters.
Lore Fact-Check: The Discovery of the Bodies
Years later, Aemond’s skeleton was recovered from the bottom of the lake, still strapped into Vhagar’s saddle, with Dark Sister still lodged in his skull. Contrary to early fan rumors, the body was not “attached to the throne,” but remained a grim underwater monument to the cost of the Targaryen civil war.
